About the workshop

3-MCPD (3-monochloropropane-1,2-diol), glycidol and the MOSH/MOAH mineral oil substances are regulated contaminants in many foodstuffs. The manual sample preparation is complex with many steps and prone to operator bias making it difficult to reproduce and compare results. The control of 3-MCPD and glycidol in oil refining processes, in particular for palm oil products, requires fast and reproducible analysis methods. Food contaminations by mineral oil hydrocarbons (MOH) can occur during food processing and from food contact materials. In both cases, 3-MCPD and MOH, serious impact on consumer health due carcinogenicity is reported and led to regulations with maximum residue concentrations that makes reproducible trace analysis of these compounds on global level indispensable. This workshop presents the fully automated sample preparation methods and analysis according to the international regulations and standards have been developed and are in use in governmental, industrial and private laboratories globally.
The automated analysis of 3-MCPD, also 2-MCPD and glycidol in edible oils uses the Axel Semrau CHRONECT Workstation MCPD with the automated hydrolysis of the fatty acid esters, then derivatization using phenylboronic acid. Analysis is done online by GC-MS or GC-MS/MS. All international ISO and AOCS standard methods have been implemented as automated workflows.

The automated MOSH/MOAH analysis in food requires the separation of the saturated hydrocarbons from the cancerogenic aromatic compounds which can only achieved by a normal phase liquid chromatography. The complete automated workflow using the CHRONECT Workstation MOSH/MOAH including the removal of biogenic interferences from alkanes (AlOx clean-up) and from natural olefins by a proprietary epoxidation step to avoid the overestimation of the critical MOAH content, is presented.
